Women's Health

What is a well-woman Exam?

Well-woman examinations provide a unique screening process, particularly for women of all ages. It covers your general health, breast screening and gynaecological care.

The well-woman exam is essential in preventative care, specifically in reproductive health.

What happens during a well-woman Exam?

In addition to a physical exam, a Well-Woman visit involves an open conversation with Dr Thusi. This provides you with the opportunity for you to speak about health concerns, pressing questions or changes you have noticed recently.

Some topics of conversation you want to discuss with Dr Thusi may include:

  • Contraception
  • Pregnancy counselling
  • Menopause symptoms
  • Diet and nutrition
  • Blood pressure or cholesterol screening
  • STI screening

What does a well-woman exam include?

Your well-woman health screening will generally include the following tests or procedures:

Standard vital signs

If you haven't seen your doctor in the last 6-12 months, then Dr Thusi will check your vital signs, which include your heart rate, blood pressure, weight, and body mass index.

Pelvic examination

A pelvic examination involves two primary steps: An examination of your reproductive organs and a Pap smear. Performing a pelvic exam is not always necessary, but Dr Thusi will discuss this with you during your initial conversation.

Pelvic exams allow her to pick up any abnormalities, such as irregular bleeding or vaginal discharge. This is especially crucial if you are in your reproductive years and are sexually active, want to start a family or start menopause.

Should you have had a Par smear recently, it is still vital to arrange a Well-Woman exam.

Breast examination

Dr Thusi will examine the breast tissue to assess for lumps, skin changes or discharge – all of which may signal cancer. The breast exam is brief, painless, and usually takes less than 5 minutes. A mammogram will then be ordered based on a physical exam and age-appropriate screening recommendations.

How long will the whole exam take?

The physical portion of the exam takes approximately 10-15 minutes but allows for time to ask questions.

How do I prepare for the exam?

There are no special requirements or preparation needed. Ensure you know your medical history and current medications, as well as questions you have for Dr Thusi.

Unsure if you need the exam? Call our clinic, and let's chat about any concerns you may have.
